The reason why the energy storage system and the power grid can be converted bidirectional is that there is an energy storage converter, referred to as PCS, which is the core device of the energy storage system and equivalent to the heart of the human body.
There are two main functions of the energy storage converter, one is to convert the battery's direct current into alternating current, which is transmitted to the power grid or to the AC load. The second is to rectify the alternating current of the power grid into direct current and charge the battery, which is the core component of the energy storage system and the power grid or micro-grid to achieve the two-way flow of electric energy.
The energy storage converter is composed of hardware and software such as power, control, protection, monitoring, etc. Its main functions include power leveling, information interaction, component protection, etc. PCS determines the output power quality and dynamic characteristics, and also greatly affects the battery life

In the energy storage converter, the material cost accounts for about 93%, of which the highest proportion is structural parts (about 25%), followed by IGBTs (about 15%) and transformers, inductors and other magnetic devices (15%).
Energy storage converter upstream industry market competition is more full, in addition to IGBT is still mainly imported, other major power electronic components have basically realized localization. The cost of structural parts and auxiliary materials is mainly the cost of their materials, which is mainly affected by the fluctuation of commodity prices

Energy storage converters (PCS) can be divided into three categories according to different application scenarios: household, industrial and commercial, and large energy storage power stations, corresponding to small (micro), medium (series), and large (centralized) :
The micro energy storage converter is used in combination with household photovoltaic, and the corresponding energy storage system is mainly used as backup power supply, emergency power supply when the power grid is cut off, and the domestic market is currently in less demand.
Series energy storage converters are mostly used in industrial and commercial distributed photovoltaic power stations, with the increase of peak and valley price differential across the country and national policy support, the future market potential is large.
Centralized energy storage converters are more used in the power generation side, the supporting energy storage system on the power grid side, and the corresponding market demand is more, and such energy storage systems are more involved in peak regulation, frequency modulation and other power grid services.

With the increase of energy storage capacity, the market size of energy storage converters has also increased. Industry experts said that the new market size of China's energy storage converters jumped from more than 100 million in 2018 to 4.5 billion yuan in 2022, and the future is expected to exceed 70 billion yuan in 2027
The annual new sales of energy storage converters are growing rapidly, especially in 2020, with a growth rate of more than 340%. As the market development of energy storage gradually maturates, experts conservatively predict a compound growth rate of 50% in the next five years

China's energy storage converter manufacturing enterprises are mainly distributed in South China and East China, among which, Guangdong energy storage converter manufacturing enterprises have the largest number, accounting for about 39%; Followed by Jiangsu and Anhui, the number of enterprises accounted for 13% and 11% respectively
At present, there are two main types of participants in the energy storage converter PCS circuit: 1) Major energy storage PCS enterprises, such as Kehua, Suoying Electric, Shenghong Shares, etc., have technical and experience advantages. 2) Photovoltaic inverter enterprises, such as Sunshine, Goodway, etc., have channels and brand advantages

China's energy storage converter industry is in the middle of the development, there are about 60 manufacturers, with the gradual release of market demand, from photovoltaic inverters, energy storage system integrators, grid side transmission and distribution equipment and other fields of manufacturers are interested in entering the PCS industry in the future.
At present, most of the mainstream energy storage converter manufacturers are mainly producing photovoltaic inverters, and the industry pattern is also highly similar, and the sales channels are highly overlapping: energy storage converters and photovoltaic inverters have a high degree of overlap in technical principles, application scenarios, upstream and downstream, for the original photovoltaic inverter manufacturers, energy storage business is a pure incremental business.
In 2022, in the domestic market, the top ten Chinese energy storage PCS providers in terms of energy storage PCS shipments are: Shangneng Electric, Kehua Digital Energy, Suoying Electric, Sunshine Power, Huichuan Technology, Nanrui Jibao, Shenghong Shares, Hewang Electric, Zhiguang Energy Storage and Pinggao Group.
In 2022, in the global market, the top ten Chinese energy storage PCS providers in terms of energy storage PCS shipments are: Sunshine Power, Kehua Digital Energy, Shangneng Electric, Guruiwatt, Shenghong Shares, Nanrui Jibao, Goodway, Suoying Electric, Huichuan Technology and Shouhang New Energy.

Overall competition situation and future development trend: the short-term competition degree of the industry is low, but it will face competitive pressure from various segments of the energy storage industry in the long term, and the current energy storage converter market in the Chinese market shows a trend of head. In the future, as the proportion of renewable energy such as photovoltaic continues to increase, the progress of energy storage technology promotes the continuous reduction of energy storage system costs, and the energy storage economy appears, and the industry will enter a stage of rapid growth. Energy storage converters will benefit from the rapid growth of electrochemical energy storage installations, and energy storage converters manufacturers will continue to enjoy the dividend of rapid market expansion.
